Business Development Officer – Legal Systems and Records

Main Purpose of the Job

"The Business Development Team has an important duty in supporting the legal teams to deliver high quality services to clients across the Council. We are looking for an experienced Business Development Officer who will play a key role in developing our legal systems to continually improve our performance and maintain the Council’s property records and asset register.

You will provide effective support to the lawyers, by maintaining the legal case management system in accordance with service standards and will manage the department’s post, process invoices efficiently and help prepare performance reports. You will need to ensure confidentiality is maintained at all times and will be responsible for the legal archiving and deeds storage system.

The post holder will respond promptly to requests for information and will collate performance data for senior managers. You should be able to take minutes of meetings and produce follow up action points. You will be highly efficient and produce accurate work and should be able to create reports suitable for a variety of audiences.

It is essential that you possess good organisational and communication skills and you will have used a variety of IT packages, with an excellent working knowledge of Excel. To thrive in this role you should be able to effectively manage a demanding workload to meet key deadlines and targets.

This is a full time post and you must be able to cover flexible hours to provide support in the office between 8.45am and 5:30 pm."



  1. Experience of records management and of maintaining file storage / retrieval systems
  2. Experience of providing high level administrative support to officers in varying levels of seniority
  3. Experience of producing financial data to support senior managers in budget monitoring.
  4. Experience of working with a wide range of IT packages including Microsoft Project, word, Excel, Access and Powerpoint to produce performance management data and reports.  
  5. Knowledge and understanding of best practice and the role of the business support function within a legal service.
  6. Knowledge of quality assurance systems.


Management Skills

  1. Experience of planning, prioritising and organising workloads and conflicting demands in line with corporate objectives and customer needs
  2. Experience of ordering supplies and services and ensure payment of invoices to achieve the Council’s payment targets
  3. Excellent time management skills to develop effective work plans, set priorities, meet deadlines and prioritise conflicting demands.
  4. Understanding and experience of the requirements to deliver high quality services in a customer focused environment.
  5. A good level of computer literacy to produce documents, develop and maintain records, produce reports and manage an electronic database.

  1. Available to work flexible hours between 8.30am and 5.30pm, to support the Legal Services Division.

Available to work out of office hours if necessary to ensure that deadlines are achieved and work is completed on schedule.
